Project Details

Phase III of the Locomotive Shop expansion represents our firm’s continued work at the Norfolk Southern Moorman Yard after having successfully completed Phases I & II. This phase will add an additional repair bay for expedited , or basic repairs to locomotives. The second project within this phase is a new freestanding locomotive wash facility.

The scope of this project began with the deconstruction of part of the existing Locomotive Shop, including the removal of exterior masonry walls, and supporting structures. Also included was deconstruction of the existing sidewalls, roof panels, and rooftop equipment at the existing Wash Facility located on Track Four within the Locomotive Shop. At teh Locomotive Shop, a new pre-engineered metal building was installed as well as a new “O-Track” or “Ought Bay” addition. The new Ought Bay included two raised rail service pits with structural steel platforms. This is all to enable repair items to be completed in this facility such as diesel electronics, replacements of pistons, radiators, starters, and batteries, diagnosing computers, changing brake shoes, replacing resistors for the dynamic braking systems, replacing cooling fans, radiator fans, windshields, and air compressors.

At the Wash Bay Facility, a new pre-engineered metal building – the “Outbound Wash Facility” was installed. This building includes wash platforms, or “cat walks,” at both the 5” and 14” elevations during the length of the building, along with a massive HVAC system to allow locomotives to be washed from top to bottom while they are still running. Other scope items were utility construction to serve the facilities including natural gas, industrial waste water, sanitary sewer, potable water and electric, as well as installation of direct fixation track including slab track, raised rail, and direct fixation rail.

All work completed on this project was constructed in close proximity to active train tracks in an active railroad yard. This required daily coordination of our work with the ongoing operations of train traffic and teh personnel that work on-site. Dunlop & Johnston, Inc. has gained key knowledge to this process, having built facilities for this client for several years now with their having full confidence in our ability to construct their improvements with no disruptions to their operatins or accidents / injuries to their employees.
